Buying exactly the measured square footage can leave a project short. A waste allowance accounts for cuts, room shape, installation pattern, damaged pieces, and material you cannot reuse.

Common planning allowances
A simple straight installation may use a smaller allowance, while diagonal layouts, rooms with many corners, or intricate patterns generally require more. A 10% allowance is a common starting point, but it is not a universal rule.
Why the layout matters
Every row creates cuts at walls and transitions. Straight layouts may allow more offcuts to be reused. Diagonal, herringbone, and other patterned installations can create more unusable pieces.
How to calculate the order area
Order area = measured area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)
Then divide the order area by the square footage covered by one box and round up to a whole box.
Example
If a room measures 200 square feet and you choose a 10% allowance, the planning area is 220 square feet. If each box covers 22 square feet, the estimate is 10 boxes.
Check the carton before ordering
Coverage varies by manufacturer and product. Use the exact square-foot coverage printed on your box rather than assuming a standard value.
