How Many Boxes of Flooring Do I Need?
Estimate the number of flooring boxes needed for a room by calculating square footage, adding a planning allowance, and dividing by package coverage.

Calculate square footage first
For a rectangular room, multiply length × width to get floor area in square feet.
Floor area = length × width
Add a planning allowance
ATHENA adds 10% to the floor area for cuts and normal material loss. A 200-square-foot room becomes 220 square feet for planning.
Convert square feet to boxes
Divide the recommended square footage by the package coverage and round up to a whole box:
Boxes = recommended square feet ÷ coverage per box
Example: 200 square feet with 20 square feet per box
A 200-square-foot room with a 10% planning allowance needs 220 square feet. If each box covers 20 square feet, 220 ÷ 20 = 11 boxes.
For a different product, replace the 20-square-foot figure with the coverage printed on that product's package and round the final result up to a whole box.
Multiple rooms or irregular layouts
Calculate each room or clearly separated area independently, then add the square-foot results before applying your planning allowance. For irregular rooms, break the floor into simple sections and add those areas together.
Why your box count may differ
Package sizes, room layouts, installation patterns, plank or tile dimensions, and manufacturer recommendations vary. Use the coverage printed on the exact flooring product you plan to purchase.

Check the product's coverage per box, confirm that the product and lot are the ones you want, and keep the calculated quantity with your project notes. Ordering enough material from the same product run can make future repairs or replacements easier.
