How Many Boxes of Flooring Do I Need?

Estimate the number of flooring boxes needed for a room by calculating square footage, adding a planning allowance, and dividing by package coverage.

Calculate square footage first

For a rectangular room, multiply length × width to get floor area in square feet.

Floor area = length × width

Add a planning allowance

ATHENA adds 10% to the floor area for cuts and normal material loss. A 200-square-foot room becomes 220 square feet for planning.

Convert square feet to boxes

Divide the recommended square footage by the package coverage and round up to a whole box:

Boxes = recommended square feet ÷ coverage per box

Example

A 200-square-foot room with a 10% planning allowance needs 220 square feet. If each box covers 20 square feet, the planning quantity is 11 boxes.
