How Much Flooring Do I Need?
Estimate flooring square footage, add a planning allowance, and calculate how many boxes to buy for a room or project. Enter room dimensions and the coverage printed on the flooring package.
How the flooring calculator works
The calculator starts with the room's floor area, adds a 10% planning allowance for cuts and normal material loss, and rounds the result up to whole boxes using the package coverage you enter.
Floor area = length × width
Recommended area = floor area × 1.10
Boxes = recommended area ÷ coverage per box, rounded up
Worked example
A 12 ft × 10 ft room has 120 square feet of floor area. With a 10% planning allowance, the recommended material area is 132 square feet. If each box covers 20 square feet, you would need 6.6 boxes, which rounds up to 7 boxes.
Why flooring needs an allowance
Extra material can be needed for cuts, layout, damaged pieces, product defects, and future repairs. The right allowance varies with the room shape, installation pattern, flooring product, and manufacturer guidance.
Use the package coverage
Flooring boxes do not all cover the same number of square feet. Enter the coverage printed on the exact product package instead of relying on a generic box size.
Multiple rooms and irregular layouts
For several rooms, calculate each room separately and keep the product and box coverage consistent. For irregular rooms, divide the space into simple rectangles, calculate each section, and add the results before applying the appropriate planning allowance.
